Up to 1941 Agricultural use
1941 RAF Long Kesh airfield opens
1942 Temporary HQ for US Army Air Force
1946 Airfield closed
1950’s 1960’s Various uses as motor racing circuit, gliding club, army vehicle store
1969 Military camp opens
1971 Long Kesh Detention centre opens
1975 HMP Maze opens
2000 Closure of HMP Maze and military camp
2003 Transfer of ownership to NI Executive
2005 Minister Pearson announces proposed sports stadium plans
2006 Demolition of prison commences
2009 FM and dFM announce stadium not to proceed and state their commitment to maximise economic, historic and reconciliation potential of the site
2010 Legislation passed establishing MLKDC
2012 Demolition and remediation completed
2012 MLKDC becomes operational with appointment of Chair and Board
2013 MLKDC launch ‘Peace to Prosperity’ vision
2013 First Balmoral Show on site Development agreement signed with RUAS for Balmoral Park site
2013 Planning permission received for Peace building and Conflict Resolution Centre
2013 EU funding for PbCRC withdrawn
2015 Halftown Rd public footpath and cycleway completed
2016 EIKON exhibition centre completed by RUAS
